nothing like a train

Posted by nate under: Uncategorized .

So we were heading out on friday, I blogged, I started packing the car, and I got a call from someone on thier way to the cities that said 94 stunk so I didn’t go.

Saturday I did go.  Everything went great, the U2 tribute was a blast, the lecture intriguing and the after party absolutely off the hook.  Seriously, we were up to almost MIDNIGHT eating animal crackers and drinking juice.

I’m lucky to be associated with a pretty amazing group of musicians and music fans and playing on Saturday night with so many of these folks in the same room was awesome.

After a equally fun night at Taylor’s B&B I picked up Lydia’s friend Charlie – also 3 1/2 – and we drove back home.  Other than eating more than his share of corn nuts it was an allright trip.  Of course I consider any 3 hour drive without a potty accident and zero crying pretty all right.

So these conspirators have been at work keeping me away from the computer and my guitar and it’s been great.  Though the two get on each other’s nerves at times the fun they have together totally out weighs it.

My only concern is that C is getting L hooked on Thomas the Train.  At the risk of offending my younger readers, Thomas the Train is stupid.  Playing with trains is cool.  But reading books about cars on tracks getting in outrageous predicaments is dumb.  So to spice it up I refer to all the trains as ‘Train’ and mispronounce ‘Sodor’ as ‘Sodom.’ Though repeatedly corrected by 2 indignant and slightly annoyed 3 year olds, I still can’t get it right.  I think my biggest gripe other than the overarching assanine premise of the stories is that every inanimate objects goal is to become ‘a really useful engine.’  I don’t think kids need to be told that their worth is on par with their usefulness.  It’s all a little works righteousness and close communion to me.

Luckily we do have a Thomas DVD, and if weren’t for that I wouldn’t get to blog or have a moment of peace.  which is currently being disrupted by screaming.  Someone crossed an invisible line I fear.  If only kids would stay on the track and commit themselves to becoming really useful.

I live with a 3 1/2 year old named Tom. We all (chokes back bile) live and breathe Thomas the Tank Engine. And I’m with you, Nate — the stories SUCK. They groan under the weight of the 1940s/British/weird class issues that this (very well meaning, I’m sure) vicar could not seem to escape in his own life. And the moral of the story is always “Don’t get too ambitious,” or “Don’t over-reach your station in life.” AGH. We got one DVD as a gift before Tom was 2, and it wasn’t too bad. It was some 10-year anniversary one, and they got George Carlin to narrate. The characters are often vain and insecure, pompous and pretentious, and not much fun at all. But it’s a whole lot better than the episodes they show on PBS, and those are still better than the BOOKS. AGH.
